Why Get Irish Citizenship?
Getting Irish citizenship, and then presumably an Irish passport, will have a lot of benefits. Well, I suppose it's only good if you're actually planning on going to Europe. Note that I said Europe, not just Ireland. If you have Irish citizenship you're also an EU citizen, and if you have an Irish passport it is also an EU passport. There are many benefits to being an EU citizen in Europe, naturally. You don't have restrictions on work and living arrangements, which gets rid of a big hassle. In Ireland, for instance, to get a work visa you'd pay over $1000 and have to get a new one whenever you changed jobs.
Get your citizenship before you have kids! If you are a citizen when you have children, your kids can then apply for citizenship using the same process described here. However, if you have kids, and then apply for your own citizenship later, your kids are out of luck. They have to do the usual 5-9 year painful naturalization process if they wanted to become Irish citizens. So even if you don't really care, think of the kiddies!

If you were born to an Irish citizen who was born in Ireland, you're automatically an Irish citizen yourself and can apply straight for an Irish passport. You'll still have to get some of the same documentation, though, if you were born outside of Ireland. Here's a section just for you.
